I spoke with the “Veep” star about the new season, her favorite “Veep” lines and getting a call from the real veep, but we also talked about Tumblr.

In some of the Season 2 episodes that were sent out to the press, both Tumblr and Reddit come up. I know “Veep” and Elaine Benes are both big on Tumblr. Do you ever poke around on that blogging platform?
You know, I don’t. I guess I should, but I probably would be frightened if I did. I don’t know, but I don’t do it a lot … should I? Or would it be a huge mistake? [Laughs.]

I think it’s fun. There are all these GIFs of great Selina insults and moments. Right after the trailer for Season 2 came out, there were a bunch from there.
No shit! I gotta go on that and check it out. We have this meeting with HBO, sort of a social media meeting, and we were talking about going to all these places and … I can’t get over what people are putting out there. It’s pretty cool. Some of it’s cool, I guess some of it’s scary, but some of it’s cool.

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer unveiled a suite of Microsoft Surface products, including a signature tablet. The 9.3 mm Microsoft Surface tablet, powered by Windows 8, is a hair thinner than the 9.4 mm iPad 3, and its 10.6-inch display has a full inch on the iPad’s. The Surface’s two standout features are a full-sized, multitouch keyboard with trackpad that also doubles as the device’s case, and a built-in kickstand for hands-free use. It also includes a magnetized stylus that uses digital ink and a full-sized USB 2 port.

A little torn on this. Granted, we tend to be reflexively anti-Microsoft at times, but this probably is the most-aggressive attempt to take on Apple we’ve seen yet, and it’s worth taking seriously. They took Apple’s biggest iPad weakness — the lack of physical keyboard — and banked the entire device on it. It’s a smart approach, but you know, it’s one that seems like it’d be simple for a Kickstarter to copy completely. It’ll be interesting to see how this affects third-party vendors, too. Either way, this seems like an attempt to take out the netbook — if they price it right, at least.

In every episode, the idea is to reveal new things about the characters, and if we don’t do that consistently throughout the season, then I think we’re blowing it. I don’t like shows where you feel like you know exactly who the people are and exactly how they’re going to behave in every situation. Then it just becomes color-by-numbers where it’s like, “Now these characters are at the circus. Now they’re in a coffee shop.” And you watch their complete, set-in-stone characters unfold in exactly the way you expect them to. That kind of television doesn’t really interest me as a writer. I don’t know that we always succeed, but that’s always the idea: to keep filling in background details and suggesting new colors to Ron—and to every character—that you haven’t seen before. -
